SUPERB 1920s AUSTRIAN ARTS & CRAFTS STYLE LEATHER LADIES PURSE or WALLET

This purse is one of those items that. When you first see it you go. It's a beauty in every sense of the word.

It is stamped in gold lettering inside. The outside is very soft leather decorated. With the most beautiful metalwork. Top right corner is decorated with a gorgeous. Gilded brass plaque (for want of a better word).

Profile of a young woman with long hair. Sporting a 1920s Flapper style headband.

With a star hanging from it. This is loose and needs re-gluing as.

Shown in photo - see Condition below. There is also a large Gothic style letter C. Looks like silver plating over brass. The back of the purse is green leather. Highly patterned with a repeating motif.

The interior is bright green silk that. A coin purse section that clips open. No photos of this open. Now for the information of the retailer/wholesaler. I could only find one reference on the internet for.

Which was a surprise I have to admit considering. The quality of this item.

It was from the catalogue. Austrian exhibition : 1906, Earl's Court. Earl's Court (London, England).

This catalogue show this firm of M. Had a large stand in two sections. Of this exhibition which means to me they were a very successful business at this time. I have copied down (including spelling mistakes) below the two entries.

I found in the catalogue that reference this business if anyone is interested. This arcade, which establishes a connection between the Western Garden and Imperial Court, is the most frequented spot in the whole expedition.

This season the whole arcade is being rented by the firm of M. Of 11 Stephanplatz, Vienna, I. Vienna Novelty Merchants, and they will put up for sale specialities in the line of applied art and tasteful industries, as well as practical articles and goods for daily use, such as leather, bronze, terra-cotta, wood, and other articles. There will be exhibited a collection of Vienna and other Austrian goods, which have never been seen in London before, a statement which is borne out of the fact that over 120 of the best Austrian manufacturers have supplied articles likely to suit English tastes. #297 (Imperial Court and Western Arcade) M Munk Jun.

Viennese specialities - branches at Karlsbad, Alte Wiese, Marienbad, Kaiserstrasse. Greatest assortment of Viennese specialities, Viennese bronzes in most artistic workmanship, Viennese leather goods, the newest, Viennese articles in wood, Viennese Enamelware, Viennese hand-bags and Waist-belts, Viennese Fans in feathers and silk, Viennese Fancy Goods. Nowhere else to be seen in such a collection. In the Western Arcade are exhibited more than 120 different manufacturers from Austria, the collection of W.

It's a very interesting read and lists all sorts of Austrian businesses. From a Condensed Milk company, to walking stick manufacturers. Sardine merchants, gold and gem merchants and manufacturers.

A sugar refiner, sculptors, lace makers, wall paper manufacturers. Liquors and National Costumes seems a funny combo to me!

In good original condition showing some signs of age and use. As shown and mentioned in description the lovely. Metal corner piece of the lady has come unstuck. Also the front leather has 3 drip marks running.

Down as can also be seen. This may be able to be cleaned off at least. To some extent so we did not glue the lady back.

On so the job will be easier if desired. Superglue is my suggestion for the gluing job.

If you do it yourself as the old glue fits in behind the. Metal lady perfectly and superglue.

This whereas a thicker glue will. Unless of course if you are going to send. It to a conservator to fix in which case. I used to restore porcelain so these suggestions. Come from years of trial and error. But not badly worn especially. A functional item used regularly I would think.

The inside is beautiful and all good. It measures 8.2cm (3 1/4) wide. And 6.5cm (2 1/2) high.

NOT including the push clasp. It weighs 15.8 grams. We guarantee our descriptions are accurate.

Please bear in mind that all our items are antique or. Vintage and may have some age related issues. If you see something I missed please come. Back to us and we will take care of it.
