(A Portrait Of Adele Bloch-Bauer, Wearing A Ruff). Circa early-1900s SIGNED: GUSTAV KLIMT. (This artwork came without any official COAs or gallery documents attached, hence it is offered in our Sale "as is").

One of the greatest modern artists. From Austria, painter GUSTAV KLIMT was the founder and leading figure in the VIENNA SECESSION. Movement - the group of artists and craftsmen who rejected the conservative academic art and values of the previous generation. He was also the principal member of the Viennese ART NOUVEAU.

Klimt is best known for his. Which, in the manner of Byzantine art. Used gold and semi-precious gems for ornamentation, and is characterized by a flat linear style, often decorated with biomorphic forms, as exemplified by his masterpiece. In its use of distortion, and non-naturalist colours, Klimt's art also has a strong element of EXPRESSIONISM. Klimt's lasting contribution to the history of art.

May be his portrait paintings. Of Vienna's leading ladies, as exemplified by his multiple portraits of Adele Bloch-Bauer.

Klimt focused on women, painting portraits of the wives of rich Austrians e. Adele Bloch-Bauer, Marie Henneberg and Eugenia Primavesi. Klimt also created a sensation with his sensuous female nude drawings and paintings, much admired by the elite of Vienna but condemned as pornographic (as was most of fellow Austrian painter Egon Schiele's work as well) by the rest of society at that time.

Although he had begun his portraiture work around the turn of the century, he devoted more and more time to it after the second. (1909), using a simpler, more painterly style, devoid of dazzling ornamental effects.

It was not until 1917 that his art. Appeared ready to make another stylistic turn; possibly influenced by his knowledge of EGON SCHIELE's. Schiele, himself, was greatly influenced by the older Klimt, whom he saw as a mentor. Unfortunately, Gustav Klimt did not live long enough to fully explore any new directions; he died prematurely, of the Polish influenza, the following year in 1918. This is a truly superb early-1900s FRAMED ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING on an off-white, fairly-thick, card-like paper stock, depicting an untitled PORTRAIT of a LADY, believed to be his favorite muse, model and lover, the already married ADELE BLOCH-BAUER.

It is an exquisite portrait in a light impasto of rich, deep OIL PAINTS, creating an inky-deep, blue-black environment for his beautiful subject. Adele is pictured here wearing a white bejeweled RUFF around her elegant neck, although it could equally well be a multi-strand necklace, it is hard to be sure which. Ruffs were certainly in fashion again in Europe at the turn of the century. The picture view-size measures a generous: 11 3/8" x 8" (29 cm x 20 1/2 cm). Matted with a gold-wood filet inner matte liner.

The beautiful, heavy, gold-wood museum-quality frame measures 24" x 20 1/2" (60 cm x 52 cm). SIGNED, in the lower-left: GUSTAV KLIMT.
