HAUPTMANN AUSTRIAN 10 TRAY ART NOUVEAU 1872-1922 Vienna solid 800 silver

Offered for sale by Caspars Place is an Art Nouveau solid 800 silver Austrian tray by A. A jeweler and gold- and silversmith in business in Vienna. /Wien in the late 19. This tray is embellished on the broad rim with three-dimensional, applied decorations of naturalistic, trailing lilies and leaves. Each of the 4 sections of silver applique is individually riveted in place.

See photographs of the back of the tray. The body of the tray is engraved with simpler foliate decorations. This tray was made between 1872 and 1922. The tray itself bears 4 marks on the rim. First, to the left is a partially legible Dianas head punch.

It is lobed in shape to indicate either 950 or 800 silver purity, but the purity number has worn away. 1 would indicate 950 silver, and 3 would indicate 800 silver. The tray is also marked centrally with HAUPTMANN, and to its right is a worn, unidentifiable makers mark.

Above Hauptmann is a fourth rubbed mark that looks like a coat of arms or an eagle. In addition, each individually riveted piece of silver applique bears two punches. The first is a tiny dogs head mark - 3 is to the left and A is to the right of the dogs head inside the punch. This is the silver purity mark used on small articles made in Vienna out of 800 silver under the hallmarking system in effect between 1872 and 1922. See photograph of an internet example of this mark. In addition to the trays purity marks, it acid tests as solid, high purity silver. Anton Dominik Hauptmann was active as a silver- and goldsmith in Vienna, Austria, from 1837 until 1885.

Franz Hauptmann was active from 1883 until 1924. As of 1894 the firm was in the hands of Franz Hauptmann and Anton Richter and the same partnership existed in 1897. Around early 1903, Anton Richter died, and the firm was continued by Franz Hauptmann alone. They were perhaps out of business, or just relocated, by 1912.

It is in very good estate condition with one exception. There is a break in one of the stems of the foliate silver applique, although the pieces meet perfectly. This break could easily be repaired by a silversmith. In addition, the tray has the patina of old tarnish and fine scratches to be expected with age and use.

The trays price reflects its condition. This exceptional Art Nouveau Austrian tray will make a gorgeous addition to any silver collection. The tray weighs approximately 11.79 troy ounces.

It is roughly 10 in diameter. At Caspar's Place we pride ourselves on our offerings and represent each item to the best of our ability. Please bear in mind that we do our best to describe and photograph each item, but pre-owned items are often imperfect and show the effects of age and use.
